Description

The premises of post office and telegraph in Chernivtsi was built due to the efforts of the president of Bukovyna Felix baron Pino von Fridental, who has repeatedly raised the issue of the construction of such facilities before the Ministry of trade. For the construction of the building 150 thousand florins was allocated from the state budget. In autumn 1887 the Ministry of trade announced a competition for development of the project of the building. The project of premises was developed by a senior construction inspector of Austrian railways Friedrich Zetts. He was the one to become the head of the construction. The new premises of post office and telegraph had 57 meters along Poshtova street, and 41 meter along the side of Music society street. The building is three-storeyed, built in Renaissance style, three lateral risalites, rich sculptural decoration of the top floor gave it a grand imposing appearance. The building is faced with rectangular stones with rough-hewn convex front surface. In the center of the building, on the right and left of the middle window there are niches, where the statues are put – symbols of trade and craft. The second floor is a little simpler than the first one. The construction is completed by the main cornice and mansard roof with attic. On the right and left, as the endings of rusticated columns, the obelisks are placed. Above the attic there is a clock and imperial eagle above it. The mansard roof ends with balustrade, where there are rods for flags. The entire roof was covered with red French slate. The premises were commissioned on November 1, 1889. It is also used as intended today, although the headquarters of Chernivtsi post office has nowadays obtained another building.
