Description

This church, which is a beautiful historical monument, was founded by Petru Rareș, in 1532. The church was painted by the same prince, in 1535. It keeps both the internal and the external painting; the votive picture depicts the founder Petru Rareș, his wife Elena Doamna, and their son Iliaș. ”The Assumption of the Virgin Mary” Church of Baia is built from stone and brick, in a rectangular plane, without a tower. By concentrating all functional elements under the same roof (church porch, bell tower, an actual sanctuary), the church adopted the typical solutions of the Moldavian architecture. The floor of the church porch opens in four arcades in broken arch, to which the sumptuous vestment of the external picture, in the late classical style, is added. Between the years 1993 and 2005, ”The Assumption of the Virgin Mary” Church of Baia underwent both preservation-restoration works of the painting, as well as archaeological research and consolidation works .
