Description

In the middle of the XIX century the Chernivtsi Armenian Catholics have come to necessity to have their own temple. The Czech architect Josef Hlavka was invited for its designing, who was then working on the Residence of Bukovinian Metropolitans. The building of the church had started in the historical Armenian quarters in 1869, and on October 9, 1875 the creation of the genial Hlavka was solemnly consecrated in honor of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. In the architectural composition of the Armenian church Josef Hlavka has originally combined the elements of Romanesque, Byzantine and gothic styles, characteristic for the medieval Bukovinian monasteries, with the traditions of Armenian cult architecture. Due to wonderful acoustics, the temple has been used as a concert hall from the beginning: here were the nights of church singing and music held, the organ resounded. The organ hall of Chernivtsi regional philharmonics is situated in the former church today; the solemn marriage ceremonies are conducted. It is also used as religious building of Armenian community. Architectural memorial of national significance.
