Description

The parochial church of St. Paraskeva is the first orthodox stone temple in Chernivtsi. The construction of the cathedral had started in 1844 by the project of the architect Pavlovsky at the place of the old wooden church on the initiative of the rector of the church father Andriy Vasylovych, and was largely conducted at his expense. The Bukovinian orthodox religious fund helped finish the construction works that have stretched for almost two decades. The event, which has become momentous for awakening of the most numerous national community of Bukovyna occurred namely in Parascheva church: the local Rusyns have first became aware of themselves as of Ukrainians. It happened on February 29, 1864, when in the newly constructed temple the third anniversary of death of the Great Kobzar was solemnly honored. Architectural memorial of local significance.
