Description

The theater was built in 1905. For the embodiment of the project of famous Austrian architects F. Felmer and H. Helmer, authors of the famous Odessa and Vienna opera and ballet theaters and another 43 in Europe, 14 months was spent. Orders for construction of Chernivtsi theater was made yet in 1900. But because of uncertainty in the financing it began only four years after. The theater was built in Elizabetplatz – now Teatralna (Theater) Square. Before the enter to the theater a monument to O. Kobylyanska is situated from 1980. The theater building and interior design are made in the Baroque style with elements of Secession (Art Nouveau) and Rococo. The facade is highlighted by an architectural element of portal arch. On the pediment of the theater there is a group of sculptures that symbolizes the patron of the theater Melpomene with angels. In the décor of exterior of the theater the architectural decoration is applied. In round windows of facades the busts of Shevchenko, Pushkin, Goethe, Schiller, Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn are installed. Above the façade tricuspid door a tricuspid lunette window is located. Between them a high relief which depicts a scene from Sophocles' “Oedipus Rex” is built in. From the oval theater lobby, decorated with white marble diagonal staircase that circles the room, one can get into the auditorium, the lodge of the mezzanine and balcony with amphitheater. In the interior a stucco décor is applied, covered with thin gold layers, rich draperies, a chandelier, sconces. The hall designed for 800 seats, has 4 proscenium lodges and 31 tiered ones. Architectural memorial of national significance.
