This is the oldest museum, which was founded in 1863 as regional museum, which immediately began work on collecting the objects in the scope of natural sciences, archeology, numismatics and phaleristics. From 1877 to 1893 the museum did not function. With the construction of a room for Bukovinian museum of crafts on Mickiewicz street, 2, the regional museum, on lease conditions, placed its exposition on one of the floors. The development of museum activity was facilitated by research of K. Romshtorfer, I. Sombati, R.F. Kaindl, V. Ariichuk, E. Kostin, I. Prokopovych. The research results were published in the yearbooks of museum. During the First World War the museum ceased operations and restored it in 1918 already under the new conditions. In 1930 the museum was reorganized into the Regional museum, and it received a new statute. In 1935 the museum was united with Industrial museum, and the Regional Museum named after King Carol the II was created. After inclusion of Northern Bukovina to the USSR in November 1940, the historical and local history museum was founded, which was accommodated in the metropolitan chambers. Already after the World War II the museum was moved to a room on Kobylyanska street.
