Description

The Jewish people’s house, or Judisches Haus, had been constructed by the project of Lviv architect Tadeusz Lewandowski. The building has two facades: one faces Steinberg street, the other – Teatralna square. On the façade facing Teatralna square the architectural and cultural image has been created: four atlantes carry two upper floors, decorated by the composition of four columns and an arch. In this image one can see a freely interpreted depiction of the Jewish sacred arc of the Testament. The appearance of the Jewish house has harmonically complemented the picture of diversity of national life of Austrian Chernivtsi, which has been represented by the people’s houses of the Ukrainian, Romanian, Polish and German communities for that time. The Judisches Haus has been taken away from the Jewish community of the city, when the state flags started to change on the city hall. The Jewish civic organizations returned to their people’s house only in the beginning of the 90-s, in the independent Ukraine. They were accommodated on the first floor, while the rest of the rooms of the Jewish house are occupied by the city palace of culture. The museum of history of the Jews was opened in this building in 2008.
