Chernivtsi musical society has emerged in Chernivtsi in November 1862 under the name “Association for assistance of musical art in Bukovyna”. Since there were no stationary premises for organization of concerts (they took place in rented rooms of “Moldavia” hotel or city council rooms), Chernivtsi magistrate has allocated a land plot for this in the eastern part of Mehlplatz (the Flour square, now – Philharmonic square). On May 29, 1876 a laying of the cornerstone in the foundation of the future building took place, and already from December 10, 1877 the premises have been solemnly opened. The construction works were led by emperor-royal construction adviser Alois Bulir, who concluded the agreement with city architect Emil von Regius. The artistic decoration of interiors of the house was worked upon by Viennese painter, professor Karl Jobst during several months (who is also famous as the author of painting of the seminar church of Three Hierarchs in the Metropolitan’s residence). In the premises the world celebrities who were on tour gave performances in their time: composer Mykola Lysenko, opera singer Solomiya Krushelnytska, pianist Artur Rubinshtein, singers Joseph Schmidt, Enrico Caruso, Paul Morgans. This is testified by commemorative plaques on the façade. Among the prominent artists of the XX century the memory of Jewish actor Sidi Tal and of People’s artist of Ukraine Nazariy Yaremchuk is crowned on the façade. Architectural memorial of local significance.
