Description

The core of historical Austrian development of the 40th of the XIX century, the center of management and administration was Ringplatz (Rynok (Market) square, the modern Tsentralna (Central) square), the dominant which has become the City Hall (now the building of Chernivtsi city council), with an area of 1562 sq. m. The building was constructed from 1843 to 1848, by the project of regional engineer and architect Anton Marin and the person responsible for the development of Chernivtsi engineer Andreas Mykulych. These two persons have made a significant contribution to the construction of administrative buildings in Chernivtsi. City Hall is an example of late classicism. The main facade of the building faces the square, the walls are decorated with pilasters, the arches of windows make additions to the classical forms of construction. The tower is two-tiered, its top is crowned with a spire, to which the state flag is attached. Daily at noon on the square in front of City Hall tourists gather to listen to the melody of “Marichka” song, which is performed from the tower by a trumpeter in all four directions. The building now also is a symbol of Chernivtsi. Architectural memorial of national significance.
