Description

The owner of this three-storeyed house in the early XX century was stated as the school of cultural society “Morgenroyt Ippen”. Since 1911 the building was sold several times, until in 1931 it would be acquired by “Speranta” company for the needs of cinema. The cinema was named “Scala” and worked from October 22, 1931 to 1945. The films of American, German, English, French production were shown, and Soviet films, both feature and documentary. In 1945 Jewish state theatre was moved here from evacuation, which had been evacuated from Kyiv to Central Asia and stayed there for 4 years. The building of Kyiv theater was destroyed during the war, this is why by its decree the government decided to choose Chernivtsi as a new place for the theater. In total there were 54 actors and an orchestra of 17 people employed. By the order of the Committee on the Arts of Ukraine from 1950 the theater was eliminated because the repertoire did not meet the requirements of contemporary Soviet theater art. Since then, the facilities were transferred to be the assembly hall of Chernivtsi state university. Since 1999 the building becomes the Palace of culture of Bukovinian medical university for 700 seats. Architectural memorial of local significance.
