Description

Separate premises for the library have been started to be built in 1938. Before that the university used the Regional public library, established in 1852 and given to the university. In the collection there were 15 000 books, and by the end of 1875 – 31 thousand copies of scientific and educational literature. The funds were constantly replenished with publications that were purchased or presented, that is why for complete functioning of the library a new building was necessary. The project was developed by architect from the Ministry of labor of Romania Leon Silion. According to the project, the building was to be constructed in neoclassical style and to consist of administrative building of 3 and a book depository of 7 floors (designed for 1 million of books). A reading room with 150 seats, a large hall for conferences, printing shop, bindery and other service rooms were planned. The project was performed by construction company of A. Dolinski. With the advent of Soviet rule and the start of the Second World War the construction was frozen until 1947. The construction of the library was completed in 1956, from the next year it has already started working. Architectural memorial of local significance. The library is composed of 12 departments, 4 delivery desks, 8 reading rooms. The funds have more than 2,6 million of copies of literature. The readers are served by around 100 specialists.
