Osyp Yuri Fedkovych (1834-1888) - a writer, teacher, editor of the first Ukrainian newspaper “Bukovyna”. Born in Storonets-Putyliv village in Bukovyna. He received primary education in a private way in Kyselytsya village. From October 1846 to July 1848 he studied at the German lower real school in Chernivtsi. In 1849 he went to Moldavia, lived in the cities of Iasi and Neamt, was engaged in self-education, began to write poetry in German. In August-September 1852 he returned to Chernivtsi. On November 1 of the same year by his father’s will he undertook military service in the Austrian army. Originally he served in Chernivtsi, then in Semyhrad (Transylvania). He participated in the Austro-Italian-French war. In 1861 the first publication of Ukrainian works of the poet was made. At the beginning of 1862 in Lviv the first collection of poems “Poetry of Joseph Fedkovych” was published, prepared by B. Didytsky, which brought him wide recognition. In March 1863 due to illness of the eyes he resigned from military service. He retired and until summer of 1872 he constantly lived in resident in Storonets-Putyliv. He published a collection of poems “Gedichte von J. Fedkowicz” (1868, Chernivtsi), “Poetry” in Ukrainian (1867-1868, Kolomya). He demonstrated a great concern for the development of public education in Bukovyna. He compiled an “ABC book”, held the first county teachers' conference. From 1872 to October 1873 he worked in Lviv at “Prosvita” (Enlightenment) company as books editor for the people. In 1876 in Kyiv he published with the assistance of M. Dragomanov a story in a separate book – “Tales of Osyp Fedkovych”. At the invitation of “Ruska besida” (Russian conversation) company from January 1885 he became the editor of the first Ukrainian newspaper in Bukovyna – ”Bukovyna”. Author of the monument’s project – sculptor Volodymyr Gamal, a member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine, the architect V. Sizov. The monument to Osyp Yuri Fedkovych was opened in the park near the first university buildings between Lesya Ukrayinka and Universytetska streets, and this event was timed to the 120th anniversary of foundation of Chernivtsi university that bears his name.
