Description

This is the first stone building in Chernivtsi, which appeared on the site of a former wooden residence, the existence of which is mentioned yet in 1777. It housed the military administration and the court, and from 1787 the district chancellery as well. By the architectural style it is a provincial version of Viennese classicism. Until 1880s this building was connected with other administrative structures through the arch. And opposite the building the guardhouse was situated. That building burned down in a fire in 1866, and the “General’s house” also suffered damage. The new guardhouse was built in 1867. Architectural memorial of local significance.
