Description

The museum was opened during the celebration of the 600th anniversary of Chernivtsi, in October 2008. The exhibition is deployed in the former Jewish House (now the Central city palace of culture). The founders of the museum are: Chernivtsi Jewish socio-cultural foundation, the Eurasian Jewish Congress and the Association of Jewish Organizations and Communities of Ukraine. The museum exposition covers the period from the late XVIII century to the mid XX century. A large number of exhibits are old books, documents, postcards, items of religion and life. An important place is taken by the religious life of the Jews of Bukovyna. The museum familiarizes with Jewish cultural and political movement of the late XIX – early XX century, literary process in Bukovyna, and the daily life of Jews, their occupations, preferences and spiritual needs. Topical sections of the exhibition are made by researchers of Chernivtsi national university. Documents are provided by Regional state archive of Chernivtsi region, scientists of University of Jerusalem (Israel), Columbia University, the Holocaust museum in Washington and IVO Institute in New York (USA). In creating the museum the charity fund “Hesed Shushana”, center “Or Avner”, famous local historians, collectors, representatives of the diaspora took part.
