Description

Malanka festival in Chernivtsi is held since 2011 by tourist NGO “Palette of Bukovyna”. Among the traditional ritual celebrations of the winter cycle in Bukovyna, a particularly bright and attractive one is the celebration of Melania and Vasyl (January 13-14) and dressing. The main purpose of the festival is presentation of Chernivtsi region as ethnically diverse land, where the traditions of folk festivals, including the tradition of malankas, are preserved. At the festival the Ukrainian, Bessarabian, Hutsul, Moldavian, Romanian malankas are presented. Both traditional authentic rituals, and actual current ones, personified in modern masks, are presented. The festival has a competition component, by the results of which the winners are determined and awarded. An important part of the festival is a festive carnival procession of participants by city streets. The festival has a special attractiveness for tourists who come for this to Chernivtsi.
