Description

Bronze monument to the classic of Ukrainian literature Taras Shevchenko was installed in 1999. It is located on Tsentralna square. Sculptors – M. Lysakivsky, P. Lemsky. Although Taras Shevchenko never had the opportunity to visit Chernivtsi, his name is particularly respected here. The word of Kobzar first sounded in Chernivtsi in the 50-60's of the XIX century. The memory of the Ukrainian prophet was first honored in 1864 in the newly built church of St. Paraskeva in honor of the anniversary of his death. The question of erecting the monument of Kobzar in Chernivtsi was raised yet in 1914 in honor of the 100th anniversary of his birthday. One of the streets of Chernivtsi was then renamed into Shevchenko street (now Oleg Olzhych street). The construction of the monument was prevented by the First World War. Only in times of independent Ukraine Chernivtsi have gained the monument to the great Kobzar.
