Description

It was named after the well-known gatekeeper of the Throne Fortress of Suceava during the reign of Stephen the Great, Luca Arbore. The church was built out of stone in 1502, on his property, together with a mansion house. From architectural point of view, the church is built on the same type of structure as the other churches of that time, Reuseni and Dobrovăț. It is built on a rectangular plane, being characterised by the extension of the longitudinal walls to the west and ending in a semi-circular vault, which it was probably used as bell tower. The value of this architectural monument is increased by the interior painting, performed between the years 1503 and 1504, as well as the external one performed by the painter Dragosin (1541), after the destructions caused by the Ottoman invasion in 1538. Although mostly lost, one can still notice that the predominant colour is green. The west wall of the narthex depicting “The cavalcade of Constantine” has a highly anti-Ottoman significance, which can be also seen in the church of Pătrăuți. The tomb of Luca Arbore is also here, with a beautiful Gothic baldachin, which, according to historians, is similar with the one accommodating the tomb of King Cazimir the IVth in the church of Wavel Palace in Cracow. His wife Iuliana is buried near the King' tomb. In the nave there is a depiction of the votive picture of Luca Arbore's family.
