Description

This is a museum of Romanian plastic art, which came into existence in 1974 in the Municipality of Fălticeni. It is built from the donation made by the Romanian sculptor Ion Irimescu (1903-2005) and houses the largest author’s collection from Romania. Today, the museum is situated downtown, on the str. Mihai Eminescu, nr. 2. The building of the museum, which is an historical monument, was built at the middle of XXth century and served different purposes, until 1974 when it was assigned to the art museum. The same year, upon the initiative and donations of Ion Irimescu, the museum came into existence, at the beginning as a department of the town museum from Fălticeni. Subsequently, the value of the collection increased, currently being the richest author's collection in the country, and in 1991 it was constituted as a free standing museum. The permanent exhibition offers the most representative creation of the artist Ion Irimescu, over 300 sculptures and almost 1000 drawings: portraits, compositions, monument projects created based on the technique ronde-bosse or self-portraits in gypsum, wood, terracotta, marble, bronze or modelling clay, graphic works, specially donated for the Art Museum of Fălticeni. The museum also includes the artist's personal library, containing almost 1500 volumes. The museum building has 10 rooms, a part of which being used to exhibit the paintings of some of the local artists. Also, the memorial space ”Ion Irimescu” is opened for the public, being arranged in the apartment where the artist lived, being situated in an adjacent building in the museum premises. In 2012, the main building of the museum entered in a process of rehabilitation. During the rehabilitation works, ”Ion Irimescu” exhibition was opened for the public in the building B, and the cultural events organized by the museum were unfolded in”Aurel Băeșu” multi-purpose room. The building, which is currently housing „Ion Irimescu” Arts Museum, has an austere and eclectic architectural style, the construction being started in 1846. It was built out of brick, on a solid foundation, and in 1909 one more floor it was added to it. The same year, the building became the administrative centre of the county of Suceava. After the Habsburg occupation, the county residence was for a while in Fălticeni, because Suceava was under foreign domination. Starting with 1923, the building was used by the Prefect’s Office of the county of Baia, and between 1950 and 1968 the Popular Council of the district of Fălticeni.
