Description

The Palace of Justice of Suceava is an historical monument-building built in 1885 in the municipality of Suceava in order to be used as Court of Law and District Court. Previously, between the years 1850 and 1855, a military garrison was built, which was fromed by a U-shaped building and a chapel. In 1885, during the mandate period of the mayor Michael von Prunkul (1884-1886), together with the establishment of the cercual court of Law of Suceava, the Austrian Authorities of the Duchy of Bukovina demolished the building of the garrison in order to built instead a new building to serve as headquarters of the cercual court of Law, the District Court and the land register. The viennese architect Ferdinand Fellner planned a new building having a basement, ground-floor and two floors which was built in the late baroque style. In the back of the property there is the only prison from the district of Suceava. The court of Suceava was assigned the districts: Câmpulung, Gura Humorului, Rădăuți and Suceava. In the year 1914, of the 20 country courts of Bukovina, 12 were subordinated to the regional court of Chernivtsi and 8 were subordinated to the cercual court of Suceava (Câmpulung, Dorna, Gura Humorului, Rădăuți, Seletin, Solca, Suceava and Stulpicani). During the period between 1948 and 1956, in the prison situated in the back of the building, the anticommunists were detained and tortured. The building is monumental, impressing through simplity and soundness. The property has a building surface of 2.626 sq.m, a gross building area of 10.064sq.m, a net area of 7.484 sq.m and contains the basement, ground-floor and two floors. The building has a rectangular shape, with an inner yard (with pedestrian walkway and trees) and entries and access points for all four sides. The floors, the ground-floor and the basement are delimited by horizontal belts with several profiles.
