Description

”The Birth of St John the Baptist” Church of Suceava, also known under the name of the Coconilor Church, Beizadelelor Church or Domnițelor Church, is an orthodox church built in the year 1643 in the municipality of Suceava. It celebrates its dedication day on the Birth of St John the Baptist, celebrated each year on June 24. The archeological findings showed that on the place of the current church it was another place of worship, which dates back from the times of Alexander the Good (1400-1432). Gentleman's Church was built in 1643, being founded by the prince Vasile Lupu (1632-1653), to serve as chapel of the princely court. The church is small in size, tall, thin, rectangular shaped, with a semicircular apse (inside and outside), and to the west has a polygonal porch at the outside and circular at the inside. The church has a tower-bell on the northern side, under which one can descend to a small vaulted ossuary-basement under the narthex floor. In the yard there is a fountain (Șipotul Mare), old spring of the princely court.
