Description

”The Holy Cross” Church of Suceava is an Armenian place of worship from Suceava municipality. On the place where today is the church, it was an older Armenian church, made of wood. As mentioned in an inscription from the door of the church and according to local Armenian tradition, ”The Holy Cross” Church of Suceava was built in 1521, during the reign of Ștefăniță Vodă (1517-1527), by Cristea Hanco (Hacih Hancoian in Armenian) in the place of the old church. The church was rebuilt several times (a restoration taking place in 1878) which gives the appearance of a XVIIIth century construction. Although intended for Armenian religion, it has numerous architectural elements belonging to the Moldavian churches. In 1776 it was built, near the southern wall of the church, a chappel with the dediction day on ”Saint John the Baptiser” in memory of the Armenian Epithrope Hovhannes Capri. The church is built from the foundation up to 3-4 meters of stone, and then of brick. The nave of the church is vaulted, extended to the west by a special vaulted space, and the narthex is divided in two. There are two entries to the nave: one through the narthex and the second, on the southern side, not attached on the transversal side of the nave. In front of the church there is a bell tower, small and supported by two counterforts, on which there are no clear information regarding the date on which it was built. Also, the bell tower underwent restoration works, on which occasion a gravestone was placed into one of the walls. The church is not painted and has Armenian icons on the walls.
