Description

”St. Nicholas” Church of Suceava is an orthodox church built in the year 1611 in the municipality of Suceava. This place of worship has it dedication day on St Hierarch Nicholas (celebrated each year on December the 6th). The founder of ”St. Nicholas” Church of Suceava remained unknown. In a work of 1876, the gymnasium professor Wilhelm Schmidt assumes that this place of worship would have been built around the year 1550 by the voivode Iliaș Rareș (1546-1551), son of Petru Rareș. In the year 1611, during the reign of Nicoară Prăjescu, the Kneaghina Maria, and their children, rebuilt the church, giving it the shape it has today. During the last works of restoration, between the years 1974 and 1980, current repairs were made, the flooring was replaced and the iron sheet metal was replaced by a copper one. The church follows the Moldavian Architecture of that time, having a rectangular shape. The edifice has big counterforts, small-size counterforts being placed between them. The church contains a vaulted rectangular sanctuary in semicyllinder, with the apse placed in the east, and the lateral apses made in the thickness of the wall, as well as a tower above the nave. The paitning was restored in the year 1895 by the painter Vladimir Mironescu.
