Zamca medieval complex was built in the year 1606 by the Armenians who sought refuge in Moldavia even since the XIVth century. Built on a plateau situated on the west side of the city, the building occupied a good strategic position. The toponym Zmca comes from the Polish word Zamek (Zamki for plural), which means ”citadel”, ”fortress” made of dirt, a toponym which is spread in Bukovina. The complex is closed with walls in the shape of an irregular quadrilateral, fortified with internal and external counterforts, having no defence towers. The architectural complex contains three buildings (the main building "Sf. Auxentie", the bell tower on the east side with a height of 26 meters and a building containing the chapel at the upper floor on the west wing, where the entry to the monastery is). The church has a rectangular shape and contains a narthex, nave and sanctuary. The church massive architecture has few decorative elements which consist of the frames of the doors and windows, the decorations combining elements of older tradition with new ones, characteristic to the beginning of the XVIIth century, such as the rossettes. The bell tower is tall, massive and contains the ground-floor and two floors. The ground-floor has a vaulted corridor having a supportig arch at both ends, beutifully decorated with stone-carved rosettes, elements which are often met in Moldavian monuments of the beggining of the XVIIth century. In the vault key of the external arch there is the number 1600, which is the date when the the tower was built. The building situated on the west side of the enclosure wall seems to have been used as headquarters of the Armenian Episcopacy of Suceava. The edficie, of rectangular shape, has a vaulted corridor where the access to the monastery is made and two rooms (on the both sides of the entry), which were used as cells. The first floor contains St Mary's Chappel (on the north side) and two cells. The second floor in the southern wing was added later.
