Description

The Roman-Catholic church of Ițcani was built in the year 1902, by the Catholic German community from the village of Ițcani which was then situated in Bukovina Duchy. It is dedicated to St Elisaveta of Hungary (celebrated on November the 17th.) Based on the results of the general population census for Romania held on December 29, 1930, in the Village Ițcani-Gară there were 534 Roman-Catholic believers (31,26% of the population) and in the village of Ițcanii-Noi there were 154 believers (21,56%). Their great majority were Germans. During the Communist regime, the number of the Roman-Catholic believers from Ițcani was getting smaller, their majority (Germans or Polish) emigrating to Germany. In march 1969, while Johann Proschinger (1967-1990) was parish priest at Suceava, at the entrance of the Church it was placed a metal cross with the following inscription: MISSION 22 – 26 III 1969, as well as the phrase ”Save your soul”, together with its translations in German (Rette deine Seele) and Polish (Ratuj dusze twoja). In the church porch there are metallic stairs which lead to the inside balcony (where the choir is singing) and up to the bell tower. The interior of the church was painted in fresco. As a result of the decreasing number of beleviers due to the emigration to Germany, moving to other places or death, the borough of Ițcani was inhabited in 2011 only by 56 Catholic families, almost 30 containing only one person. The priest Dumitru Patraşcu of the parish of Suceava and dean of Bukovina, expressed his fear that in the future there will be no need for a Roman-catholic church to exist, and the believers who remained there would have to got to Suceava because the church will be transferred to another religion in order to use it for the same purpose for which it was built. ”With the natural selection, it will come to the fact that there will be no need for Ițcani to have a church. The parishoniers who will remain here will have to come to the town to participate in the liturgy, to the other Roman-Catholic church of Suceava” stated the priest Patrașcu.
