Description

George Cantacuzino, a big logothete of Iasi, lived in the time of Ionita Sandu Sturdza (1822-1828) and demanded, through his will, to be buried at Suceava, near the Fortress of Stephen the Great. Its funerary stone is inscribed in Slavic: ”here rests the God servant, the great logothete of Moldavia, prince George Cantacuzino, who in 1821, coming to Suceava, died in the year 1826, month of May, 17”. The stone has on its frontispiece an eagle's wings, supported by a Slavic text, arranged in semi-circle: ”The mark of the family of Cantacuzino princes”. In 1862, the daughter of the prince, Helen, orders in Wien a chapel made from forged iron with a refined architecture, for the grave of his father. On the metallic plate on the crypt is written the same text on the gravestone, with the addition: ”Placed by his daughter, Helen, in 1862”. Today, the dome presents and advanced degree of deterioration, the cross and some of its socle being collapsed on the grave, eaten away by rust and invaded by plants.
