Description

Was created by Movilești boyars and is considered to be completed between the years 1583 and 1596. The best period for this monastery is after Ieremia Molvilă (1595-1606) comes back to the throne of Moldavia, when, to the already built church, two new porches, new houses and the surround wall are added. The walls are massive, over 100m long, 3m thick and 6 m high, having defence towers. From this point of view, this is the most fortified monastery from Moldavia. The church of this complex keeps the construction style of the XV-XVIth centuries, being considered the last church with exterior painting. The painting was made by the brothers Ion and Sofronie, the painting being given a narative and antiottoman character, trying to exceed the limits of the traditional models, by their own interpretation of the event. One should mention the scenes representing ”Ioan Climax's ladder”, the constellation of the phylosophers of the antiquity, ”Constantinople siege”. In this church, colours like green and red prevail. The church contains the graves of Ieremia and Simion Movilă, as well as of other relatives of the ruling family. The narthex presents the votive picture, which due to the very large number of characters is continued also on the southern wall. The monastery museum contains cultural object of great artistic value, such as: an epitaph from the XVth century, a cover from 1493, Ieremia Movilă (1606) and Simion Movilă (1609) tombs covers, a silver capsule with a strand of hair belonging to Mrs Elisabeta Movilă (1616).
