Description

This monument is situated in the village of Voievodeasa, on the right side of DN17A, to the direction of travel from Rădăuți to Sucevița and represents a cylindrical column made of stone. In the ornamental motif carved on the cylindrical surface at the base of the column there are four medallions bearing the letter ”R”. This obelisk was built by the inhabitants of the German colony Fürstenthal (which is called today Voievodeasa) in order to mark the passing through this locality of the archduke Rudolf of Habsburg, the only son of the Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria and of the Empress Elisabeta (7 – 11 July 1887). The oblisque built in the memory of his visit, with the stone carved column was, including the base, 8,5 meters tall. The top of the obelisk ended in a emperor's crown, which disappeared after 1940, when the repatriation of the Germans who lived in Bukovina took place. From the base of the monument, the lead plate which mentioned the passing of the archduke through the locality was removed.
