Description

The idea to build a headquarters for the administration belongs to the mayor Vasile Deac, who had an important role in the transformation and development of the small town of Vatra Dornei into a balneary and climatic resort. In order to build this resort, the following institutions worked together: the mayoralty of Vatra Dornei as representative of the people of the town, the Orthodox Church of Bukovina, as owner of the baths and the Imperial Government, as representative of the state. The works began in the year 1895 and will be completed at the end of September 1897. The palace had spaces with specific purposes: the Financial Administration operated in the rooms of the today's Ethnographic Museum, to the right of the main entry it was a room used for the celebration of marriages which had a door to the office of the Vital Records` clerk, and the rest of the west wing was used by the secretary of the mayoralty and his helps. The two rooms used by the Antiquity and Ethnographic Museum of Dornelor country were situated in the current place used by the popular costume department of the Museum of Ethnography. Upstairs there was a place used for solemn reunions and for ceremonies, like today, the mayor's office and other halls used especially for ceremonies. The building suffered important damage during the First World War, especially through the destruction of the crystal mirrors, decorations, frescoes, recesses and chandeliers from the mayoralty hallways. The restoration of some of the pieces made during the inter-war period was not at the level of the old ones. The communal palace, more than 100 years old, still remains in the national heritage as historical and architectural monument.
