Description

The idea to create a casino in Vatra Dornei belongs to the physician Denarowschi (according to his report dated June 7, 1873), being connected to his wish to develop the balneary establishment from Vatra Dornei. The credit for building this edifice belongs to the mayor Vasile Deac, who, together with Paul P. Brang from Wien, during the audience with the Emperor Franz Joseph, in the year 1886, presents an experimental model and obtains the Emperor`s approval to build this edifice. After several trials, the project will be completed only in 1895, and the works will begin in 1896 and will be completed in 1898. The funding of the works will be ensured by the Romanian Orthodox Church of Bukovina. The casino is built in eclectic style, with the influences from the German Renaissance. The length of the main façade is of 60m, having in its centre on the main axis a concert hall. This hall was foreseen with balcony for the orchestra, a scene for theatre and musical shows, and, to the right and left of the scene there were high mirrors of „Florence crystal”. The dome had also a chandelier system, made also of crystal, and the walls had ingeniously ornamented recessed lightings. There were also halls for reading, music, dance, billiard games, etc. The outside of the building contains small towers in its corners, recesses and prominences labyrinths, statuettes which harmoniously complete the outer appearance. In 1936, the building was partly modified, especially the large hall, by adding a pit for the orchestra, the wooden platform being replaced with a concrete one, new partitions were made, and, in the back of the casino, a terrace was made. These works were done under direct supervision of the engineer Gheorghe Constantinscu, expert of the Church for Vatra Dornei baths. Then it followed the period of the Second World War, when the building was confiscated and used for different purposes. After June 11, 1948, as a result of the nationalization, the building became the property of the state and suffered changes in the use of its spaces. Between the years 1987 and 1988 measures to make general repairs of the building were taken, but the slow pace of the execution and the 1989 events ended these works. Therefore, at this moment, this impressive and emblematic building of Vatra Dornei town is in ruin and the chances to be rehabilitated are small.
