Description

The archaeological site of Volovăț – Burlei Hill is part of a large necropolis, situated on the southern frame of Rădăuți basin, from Burlei Hill up to Arșița Hill, from the border of Margina commune. The dominant position made that the objective to offer a vast perspective over the basin but, at the same time, to be noticeable from large distances by the death people descendants. The surface research showed that the necropolis has 5 sectors with a variable minimum number of barrows, from one to 11, summing up at least 22 such monuments. Some of them are in the woods, which makes the research more difficult, but which also slowed town their destruction. Systematic research undertaken only in Burlei Hill, in the A sector of the necropolis, showed that all the moments being analysed where built in the first Age of Iron, Hallstatt. Still, of the 9 monumnents on which we have some information, has vestiges of the early Hallstatt and 2 of the late Hallstatt. As it results, one of the barrows was used during the both periods.
